Part 2 – ‘Fascism and War’ 1931 to 1945
60 mins 16mm/DVD, 1986-88
Part 2 is set against the slump of the Thirties, the rise of fascism and the Second World War. It tells of British establishment support for Mosley’s Blackshirts, and the appeasement of Hitler in the hope that he would attack the Soviet Union. The film also examines the Communist Party’s leadership of the struggle against cuts in unemployment benefit in the thirties and its role in organizing volunteers to fight against the fascist rebellion in Spain. It looks at how the establishment switched to being pro-Soviet after 1941, and shows the radicalising effect of the war on the British People.
